The Federal Government has announced plans to completely phase out the use of chalkboards in Nigerian schools by 2027.

Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, made this known during a ministerial roundtable meeting in Abuja, explaining that the Tinubu-led administration is working to fully digitalize the education sector.

According to him, beginning in 2026, the annual school census will be conducted digitally as part of the broader modernization plan.

Alausa also revealed that over 60,000 learning tablets have already been distributed to pupils in Adamawa, Oyo, and Katsina states under the Airtech (Amazon Web Services) and BESDA programmes, with an additional 30,000 devices expected to arrive soon.

“We launched a smart board two weeks ago. The goal is that by 2027, every school in Nigeria will have one. This is how we can ensure access to high-quality education for every child, regardless of location, background, or social status,” he stated.

The minister explained that the introduction of interactive smart boards would replace traditional chalkboards, providing a more engaging and technology-driven learning experience.

He added that the digital tools would allow teachers to integrate multimedia, online resources, and interactive lessons, making classrooms more participatory and effective for students across the country.
