West Africa’s hospitality industry is emerging as a key indicator of regional infrastructure development and economic integration, reflecting trends in travel, investment, and cross-border connectivity.

According to industry surveys on hotel chain expansion, West African countries account for more pipeline deals than any other sub-region in Sub-Saharan Africa, representing 14 out of 18 active markets. Data from recent hotel chain development reports indicate that markets in Nigeria and Ghana are leading room capacity growth as the continent’s hotel pipeline reaches record levels.

“Nigeria alone accounted for nearly half of West Africa’s planned rooms in earlier surveys,” the report noted, underscoring investor confidence and the growing presence of global hotel brands in the region.

Experts emphasize that room capacity is more than a commercial metric. Countries with larger portfolios of branded hotels tend to have stronger transport networks, higher corporate travel demand, and more developed tourism ecosystems. Nigeria, with 7,622 planned rooms, ranks second only to Egypt in Africa’s hotel pipeline.

The strength of West Africa’s hospitality sector comes from both the number of participating countries and the diversity of its markets, spanning business hubs such as Lagos and Accra, as well as emerging leisure destinations like Dakar and Abidjan.

Nairalytics compiled a list of the region’s 10 largest hotels by room numbers, drawing on data from leading economies. The selection used information from third-party platforms including TripAdvisor and The Hospitality Group Report, combined with primary research based on publicly verifiable hotel data.

Among the notable hotels is Krystal Palace Douala in Cameroon, which opened in late 2021 in Douala’s Akwa business district. The hotel has 227 contemporary rooms and positions itself as “a modern lifestyle destination that blends luxury with African elegance.” Its signature restaurant, Le Lustre, led by a French chef, features a mix of local and international cuisine. The property aims to cater to both business and leisure travelers seeking a premium hospitality experience in Cameroon’s commercial hub.
