Sixteen inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, after overpowering prison personnel in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, the jailbreak left five officers injured as the escapees broke free.
Authorities say security agencies have launched a manhunt to recapture the fleeing inmates. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements.
The NCoS assured the public that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the breach.
