A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has insisted that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a member of the opposition party despite speculation linking him with other political platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group stated that Jonathan recently took part in the PDP’s digital membership registration exercise and completed his registration in his ward.
The clarification appeared in a statement released on Saturday by the faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong.
The faction dismissed campaign posters circulating online which associate the former president with other political parties. It described the materials as deceptive and urged Nigerians to ignore claims that Jonathan had defected from the PDP.
According to the statement, some of the posters present Jonathan as a presidential candidate, while others portray him alongside different politicians as running mates for the 2027 election.
The Turaki-led faction maintained that Jonathan remains a fully registered member of the PDP under its leadership structure. It also stated that the former president reaffirmed his membership during a recent meeting with the party’s interim National Working Committee.
The group said the clarification became necessary because Nigerian law does not permit an individual to belong to more than one political party at the same time.
It further alleged that certain individuals could attempt to register Jonathan and other politicians in multiple political parties without their knowledge or approval.
The faction therefore called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and members of the public to disregard any registration documents or campaign materials linking Jonathan to any political party outside the PDP.
