A political pressure group, Oyo Defender, has raised concerns over what it described as political manoeuvres aimed at promoting a former commissioner as a contender in the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.

The group made its position known in a statement signed by its Secretary, Adedosu Ifaponle.

Oyo Defender said it is worrying that at a time when citizens are demanding credible and transparent leadership, individuals facing serious allegations of financial misconduct are being positioned for top political offices.

According to the statement, the unnamed aspirant has been linked in public reports to an alleged ₦30 billion case involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The group stated:

“While we acknowledge the principle of presumption of innocence, such weighty allegations cannot be ignored or dismissed without clear and transparent resolution.

“Leadership, especially at the level of governor, requires not only competence but unquestionable integrity and public trust. The management of state resources is a sacred duty, and any aspirant seeking such responsibility must be beyond reproach in both record and reputation.”

Oyo Defender called on anti-corruption agencies to properly investigate the allegations and make their findings public.

“The people of Oyo State deserve clarity, accountability, and assurance that those seeking to govern them meet the highest ethical standards.”

The group also urged political parties, civil society organisations, and the public to reject candidates with questionable credibility.

> “Furthermore, we call on political parties, civil society organizations, and the general public to reject any attempt to impose candidates whose credibility is under serious question. The 2027 election must not be reduced to a contest of political manipulation, but rather a defining moment for restoring integrity and trust in governance.

“Oyo State deserves leadership rooted in honesty, accountability, and genuine service to the people—not ambition clouded by controversy.”
