One 30-year-old woman, Adama Hannafi, from Auyakawa village in Dutse Local Government Area, tragically commit suicide by hanging at Sumore Village, Jigawa State.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday in a statement made available to journalists in Dutse, the state capital, by the Jigawa Police Public Relations Officer, Shi’isu Adam, said the incident occurred around 3 pm on October 7, 2025, when police received a report that Adama, who had been mentally unstable, was found hanging from a tree.
“A team from Yalwawa Division rushed to the scene and found her lifeless body, which was carefully lowered for examination. No foul play was suspected,” he explained.
The police spokesperson further revealed that the body was taken to Dutse General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed the death.
Preliminary investigations according to the police spokesperson showed that Adama had been struggling with mental illness before the incident, and she leaves behind her husband and four children.
Adam therefore called on the community to promptly report any signs of distress or unusual behaviour to the nearest police station or health authorities for timely intervention.
“This tragic event highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and support for mental health challenges in Jigawa State communities,” he added.
The command appealed to all citizens to stay alert and compassionate in helping those who may be silently battling mental health issues.
However, Adam encouraged the public to break the silence around mental illness to help avoid future tragedies.
He then advised families to seek early medical and psychological help to prevent such tragedies.
Accordingly, the state commissioner of police, Dahiru Muhammad, expressed deep sadness over the incident, urging the public to be vigilant and caring towards relatives or neighbours showing mental distress.
