Music producer Igbinoba Osaze, popularly known as Ozedikus Nwanne, has explained why he moved from gospel music to secular music production.
In a recent interview, Ozedikus said although he started with gospel music, it was not financially sustainable for him at the time.
He revealed that while playing piano for churches and bands brought in some income, it was not enough, and he had to look for better opportunities in mainstream music.
“I was more connected to gospel music at the beginning, so I would have had more gospel artistes around me. I probably would have started there. However, most gospel artistes at the time were not recording in studios, and you need money to start those things. So I had to go where the money was first,” he said.
He added that he often worked without pay, including a period when he played in a church for months without receiving any salary.
“My main income came from playing the piano with bands and in church. At one point, I played for a church for about eight months without being paid, yet I was still surviving. That made me realise that production had actually been sustaining me during that period,” he explained.
According to him, the experience made him realise the importance of focusing on music production as a career.
“Around 2017, I fully transitioned into music production. Before things picked up, it was really hard and exhausting,” he added.
Ozedikus said the journey was challenging in the early stages, as he had to handle both the creative and business sides of his work before eventually getting a manager to help organise his career.
