In a major political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, the National Coalition Movement has officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its unified political platform.

The decision was reached during an expanded meeting of coalition leaders held on July 1, 2025, marking what observers describe as a significant realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape.

In what is being described as a “historic moment”, former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, representing the Social Democratic Party (SDP) caucus in the coalition, moved the motion for the adoption of ADC. The motion was seconded by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi signaling broad consensus among progressive-leaning political actors.

Following the endorsement of the ADC, the coalition also ratified two key appointments:

Senator David Mark, former Senate President, as Interim National Chairman of the ADC.

According to Dr. Uche Diala, Co-leader of the National Coalition Movement, the move reflects *“patriotic sacrifice and a spirit of selflessness by coalition leaders in the interest of national unity and democratic progress.”

“This is a goal exemplified by the spirit of selflessness, patriotism, and sacrifice exhibited by the leaders of the movement,” Dr. Diala stated in an official communication released shortly after the meeting.

The coalition has also clarified that members of the legacy parties — SDP and Labour Party — who have scheduled elections to contest under their current platforms will remain in their respective parties for now** and will receive full support from the coalition in those races.

This strategic alliance is expected to reshape the build-up to the 2027 elections, as talks of a strong “third force” outside the dominant APC and PDP gain renewed traction.

Observers say this move may set the stage for one of the most dynamic electoral contests in Nigeria’s history.
