Nigerian singer Liya, whose real name is Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola, has revealed that she left Davido Music Worldwide in search of personal and professional growth.

Liya, who became the first female artiste signed to the label owned by Davido in October 2020, officially exited the label in 2023.

Speaking during an interview on Wahala with Josy Anne, she explained that her time at the label came with emotional struggles that affected her wellbeing.

According to her, she battled depression, exhaustion, and health issues, which led to her decision to leave.

“Why did I leave? I just wanted more for myself, as a person and as an artist.

“It was sad, it was depressing, I was tired, I was sick, but it was a decision that I had to make for myself,” she said.

Liya also addressed the criticism she faced during her time at the label, saying many people misunderstood her situation and accused her of being lazy.

“They called me names people saying she’s lazy, she doesn’t know what she’s doing. They’re just pouring money on her, and she’s not doing anything,” she said.

She further revealed that the challenges affected her social media presence, noting that she did not manage her Instagram account for over two years, leaving it in the hands of her manager.

Despite everything, Liya expressed appreciation to her manager for his patience and understanding during that period.

“He was tired, but I’m so glad he understood. He never pushed me or forced me,” she added.

Liya gained recognition after joining DMW in 2020, releasing songs like “Melo,” “Adua,” and “Lakiriboto.”
