The Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano State Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, has criticised former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for leaving the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Bature described Kwankwaso’s departure as a betrayal of Mr. Boniface. He said the development offered an important lesson in politics, explaining that the focus on “betrayal” stems from Kwankwaso leaving the NNPP, not abandoning the Kwankwasiyya movement itself.

“We did not say we left the Kwankwasiyya movement or its ideas, and we have not stopped wearing the red cap,” Bature emphasised.

He further stated that it is time to pray for Kwankwaso, arguing that the former governor has betrayed himself by exiting the party. Bature also remarked that everyone is now in a similar situation, noting that, in some way, people have betrayed Mr. Boniface.

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso confirmed on Sunday that he had resigned from the NNPP with immediate effect. In a statement personally signed by him, the former governor explained that his decision followed careful consideration of Nigeria’s political landscape and the need to join a platform that offers better prospects for genuine change.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the NNPP with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso said.

The former NNPP presidential candidate in the 2023 elections acknowledged that leaving the party was not an easy choice, given his long history with it. However, he insisted that the current political climate requires a new direction.

“After looking at how things are going in the country, I believe it is necessary to join another political platform that gives the best chance to bring real change,” he added.
