Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has criticized Enzo Fernandez over his leadership approach and recent remarks following Chelsea’s exit from the UEFA Champions League.
Fernandez had previously questioned Chelsea’s performance after their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain last month. The Argentina World Cup winner said PSG were tactically superior to Liam Rosenior’s squad.
The player also made headlines by telling ESPN Argentina that he was uncertain about his future at Chelsea beyond the current season. In another interview with LuzuTV, Fernandez stated that if he could live in any European city, he would choose Madrid.
Obi Mikel, speaking on his Obi One Podcast, argued that Fernandez’s comments show he lacks leadership. The former Super Eagles captain said, “That is not a leader. That is something where if you have leaders, if you have leaders that players respect and look up to, you wouldn’t come out and make those statements.
“You don’t make that statement after we’ve been disgracefully dumped out of the Champions League, wearing the captain’s armband. No player is bigger than the football club. If he’s had enough, put your hands up and f*** off. And we move on.
“I can understand a little bit of frustration, but you still have to respect the badge, you still have to respect the football club, you still have to respect the fans, because the fans are the ones who pay your wages.”
Obi Mikel’s remarks underline his belief that true leaders demonstrate respect for their club and supporters, regardless of on-field disappointments or personal frustrations.
