At least 24 people have been killed in a deadly attack on Debe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, sparking outrage and calls for investigation from Amnesty International.

The attack reportedly happened on April 5, 2026, during Easter Sunday. It left several people dead and many others displaced, according to residents who escaped the violence.

Witnesses described the assault as extremely violent and indiscriminate.

One resident told Amnesty International:

“The killers were on rampage. During the attack they killed Muslims, Christians and followers of traditional religion. They killed every human being they came across.”

The attackers also caused widespread destruction in the community. Several homes were burnt down, leaving many families homeless. A Catholic Church, identified as an outstation of Sacred Heart Parish Shafa, was also destroyed.

At least 14 shops were set on fire, destroying goods and wiping out livelihoods in the rural area.

Many residents fled to nearby communities, leading to fresh displacement concerns.

Amnesty International condemned the attack and called on Nigerian authorities to carry out a “prompt, thorough and impartial investigation” to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The organization also urged urgent protection for survivors and humanitarian support for displaced families, noting that many affected people now need help to rebuild their lives.

Authorities in Kebbi State have not yet released an official detailed statement on the incident at the time of this report.
