Barcelona Edges Celta Vigo But Suffer Injury Setbacks

Barcelona strengthened their grip on La Liga with a narrow 1-0 win over Celta Vigo at Camp Nou on Wednesday. The victory extended their lead over Real Madrid to nine points with six matches left, but the night was overshadowed by injuries to key players, including teenage star Lamine Yamal.

The decisive moment came midway through the first half when Yamal won and converted a penalty. The 16-year-old forward combined with Dani Olmo before being brought down by defender Yoel Lago. He calmly dispatched the spot-kick past goalkeeper Ionut Radu, but immediately pulled up clutching his hamstring. Medical staff treated him on the pitch before he was substituted, raising concerns about his availability for the remainder of the season.

Joao Cancelo also left the field injured, adding to Barcelona’s worries. Despite these setbacks, the Catalan side held firm to secure three crucial points.

Midfielder Pedri emphasized the importance of the win, noting that every match now carries weight as Barcelona aims to seal the title quickly. He expressed hope that Yamal’s injury would not keep him sidelined for long, stressing the youngster’s resilience and potential for recovery.

Coach Hansi Flick’s team showed signs of fatigue following their Champions League quarter-final exit to Atletico Madrid. Their attacking play lacked fluency, and they struggled to create clear chances. Goalkeeper Joan Garcia was called into action early, making key saves from Pablo Duran and Ferran Jutgla to keep Barcelona level.

The match was briefly halted for over 15 minutes due to a medical emergency in the stands, coinciding with Yamal’s injury. When play resumed, Roony Bardghji replaced the teenager.
Barcelona thought they had doubled their lead in the second half when Ferran Torres volleyed home from Pedri’s pass. However, the goal was ruled out for offside after a close review. Marcos Alonso later struck a free-kick into the wall, leaving Barcelona to defend their slender advantage until the final whistle.

Celta Vigo, who remain seventh in the table, created opportunities but failed to capitalize. Jutgla reflected on the match, acknowledging his team’s strong first-half performance but conceding that Barcelona’s individual quality proved decisive.

Barcelona’s victory places them firmly in control of the title race. With a nine-point cushion and a Clasico against Real Madrid scheduled for May 10, the outcome of that fixture could prove decisive. Flick’s side must balance their pursuit of the league crown with managing injuries to key players.
For Celta Vigo, the defeat was a setback in their push for European qualification. They remain in contention but must improve consistency to secure a place in continental competition.

Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid suffered a 3-2 defeat against relegation-threatened Elche, continuing a poor run of form. Despite reaching the Champions League semi-finals, Diego Simeone’s side has now lost seven of their last eight matches across all competitions.

Atletico fielded a rotated squad following their Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad. Nicolas Gonzalez scored twice, but Elche responded with goals from Andre Silva and David Affengruber. Simeone’s team played an hour with ten men after Thiago Almada was sent off for pulling back Affengruber inside the box. Silva converted the resulting penalty and later struck the winner.

The defeat leaves Atletico secure in fourth place but struggling for momentum ahead of their European clash with Arsenal. Simeone accepted responsibility, acknowledging the team’s difficulties and the need to regroup quickly.

Barcelona’s win consolidates their position at the top, but injuries to Yamal and Cancelo could complicate their run-in. Celta Vigo must sharpen their finishing to maintain hopes of European qualification. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, face mounting pressure to stabilize their form before crucial continental fixtures.

The latest round of matches highlights the intensity of La Liga’s final stretch, where every point and every injury could shape the outcome of the season.
