The Federal University of Technology Akure, popularly known as FUTA, has been thrown into mourning following the discovery of the lifeless body of a 100-level student identified as Favour Olaniyi.
The 23-year-old student, who was studying Surveying and Geoinformatics, was reportedly found dead inside a bush near the North Gate area of the institution.
According to reports, an empty bottle containing a substance suspected to be a harmful herbicide was recovered near the scene, raising suspicions that the student may have taken his own life.
The incident shocked many students and residents in the area, with several people gathering around the scene after the discovery of the body.
Confirming the development, FUTA’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo, expressed sadness over the incident and disclosed that the deceased’s parents had already been informed.
He also stated that the university is cooperating with police investigators while officials from the Students Affairs Division are offering counselling and emotional support to students affected by the tragedy.
According to him, the university has always encouraged students facing emotional or personal challenges to seek counselling and guidance whenever necessary.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that an investigation has begun into the incident.
He added that detectives who visited the scene did not find visible signs of violence on the deceased’s body, while the corpse has been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and further examination.
