At least two people have been killed and several others injured after a fresh attack on Kyeng village in Bachi District, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly happened on Sunday night when suspected Fulani bandits invaded the community and opened fire randomly for several hours, causing panic and destruction in the area.
The National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Barr. Solomon Mwantiri, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday morning. He strongly condemned the killing, noting that it came just days after similar attacks in Barkin Ladi LGA, where over 10 people were reportedly killed.
According to the statement issued through the National Publicity Secretary of BYM, Rwang Tengwong, the attackers were described as armed Fulani assailants who ambushed residents while they were asleep and carried out the deadly assault.
The group said the attack was unprovoked and also expressed frustration that repeated calls to security agencies did not lead to any immediate response, leaving residents helpless during the attack.
The victims were identified as Peter Dung, 22, and Amos Bele Danbwarang, 19, who were said to have been shot dead before the attackers fled into nearby bushes.
“This Is Another Condemnable Attack On Another Berom Village. It Is Not Only Barbaric, Inhuman, But Also Part Of The Continuing Violence Against Innocent Native Communities In Plateau State,” The BYM Statement Said.
“The Killing Of These Young Men Is Painful And Unacceptable. It Reflects The Continued Assaults On Peaceful Communities And Innocent Residents,” The Association Added.
The group called on security agencies to immediately track down and arrest the perpetrators, insisting that justice must be served. They also urged government authorities at all levels to take stronger and more effective action to stop the ongoing killings and insecurity in Plateau communities.
