President Donald Trump is said to be more seriously considering restarting military strikes against Iran following the rejection of Tehran’s counter-proposal and a worsening oil crisis, raising concerns about global energy markets.

Trump Aides Say President is More Seriously Considering Resuming Iran Military Strikes
President Donald Trump is now more seriously considering restarting military attacks against Iran, according to multiple sources close to the situation. The shift comes as Iran rejects Trump’s counter-proposal for ending hostilities, calling the ceasefire “life support”- a sign that diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran are at a tipping point. Sources familiar with Trump’s position say the President’s latest consideration is a response to growing frustration within the White House regarding Iran’s negotiating tactics, but no final decision has yet been made.

Major Decision on Iran Expected After Trump’s China Trip
A definitive announcement regarding restarting military strikes in Iran is unlikely before Trump concludes his visit to China. The President’s trip to Beijing is seen as placing Iran’s Iran situation lower on the immediate agenda, and delaying any significant decision regarding U.S. Military engagement there. To further cloud the situation, an advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader recently cautioned Trump not to interpret the current pause in conflict as a sign of victory while the President travels to China for crucial diplomatic talks. Iran’s message is clear: the absence of fighting doesn’t mean a retreat.

Iran Ceasefire on “Life Support” as Counter-proposal is Rejected
The fragile ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. Is on “life support” following President Trump’s rejection of Tehran’s most recent counter-proposal, intended to officially end the hostilities. The rejected counter-proposal has only exacerbated the diplomatic standstill between the two nations, as they remain without a solid agreement to halt combat permanently. This cease fire, can it be restored before President Trump’s exit from China, leaving the Washington in a predicament politically?

Closing the Hormuz strait could bring back an upset in global energy market’s recovery
And all of these are beginning to seep into global energy markets so far: A major Saudi oil company warns that the oil market will not normalize this year unless the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit point for a fifth of the world’s oil, is reopened quickly. A prolonged shutdown of the Strait would have catastrophic effects on oil prices and global energy security.

U.S. Releases 53.3 Million Barrels of Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Amidst the escalating oil supply crisis, the United States has declared its intention to release 53.3 million barrels of crude oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
The crude will be offered to energy firms as a loan as part of a global endeavor to manage prices following the oil supply shock triggered by Iran’s crisis and the possibility of a Strait of Hormuz closure. It is the largest crude oil release ever from the U.S. Reserve and it signifies the severe instability the oil market faces, and President Biden’s fears of protracted supply shortages if oil prices are not capped.

What happens next: Critical points to watch
Amidst President Trump’s China trip and Iran’s fluctuating ceasefire deal, here are the points to focus on: Iran’s immediate future is murky-Will Tehran modify its negotiation approach or adopt a tougher posture?
President Trump’s decision post-China holds the most significance-sources expect a pivotal choice regarding an Iranian military strike will follow his return to Washington. How long the Strait of Hormuz stays closed will be observed with keen interest-every extra day it stays shut, the greater the strain on global oil prices. Finally, the effect of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve release on global oil prices will be watched closely-If 53.3 million barrels do not suffice, then additional action would have to be taken.
