The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of the country, following resolutions reached at the 102nd meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Monday in Abuja.

In a communique presented by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, NEC also ratified the appointment of Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party. Damagum, who had served in acting capacity, will remain in office until the party’s elective national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, between November 15 and 16, 2025.

Key Resolutions

The NEC expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness by various organs, chapters, and structures of the party for the upcoming national convention. It also approved the report of the zoning committee, which recommended that all current PDP national offices remain within their existing regions.

The communique further highlighted that since the position of National Chairman has been retained in the North, the party’s 2027 presidential ticket is zoned to the South. PDP regional chapters were directed to immediately micro-zone positions within their regions for effective implementation.

Additionally, NEC received updates from the PDP Constitution Amendment Committee and directed it to circulate the draft amendments to all party structures for further input.

Condemnation of APC

The PDP NEC strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the ruling party of attempting to capture the state through intimidation, inducement, and violence during recent bye-elections.

It particularly condemned what it described as the “militarization” of bye-elections in Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara States, where security forces were allegedly deployed excessively for a run-off election in only five polling units in Kaura Namoda South constituency.

According to the PDP, such actions demonstrate the APC’s “desire to turn Nigeria into a totalitarian one-party state,” which the opposition party described as a grave threat to democracy and national unity.

Looking Ahead

The PDP reaffirmed its commitment to defending democracy and protecting the interests of Nigerians as it works towards regaining power in 2027.

The NEC adjourned its meeting to reconvene on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
