The first group of Nigerians marked for deportation from the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration has departed America.

Former Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, disclosed this to reporters late Wednesday while commenting on migration issues in West Africa.

Although details of the number of Nigerians deported were not immediately available, Mahama noted that the deportation exercise also affected citizens of other African countries.

He described the situation as a wake-up call for regional governments to create stronger economic opportunities at home in order to stem irregular migration.

“What we are witnessing is not just about Nigerians or Ghanaians, but about Africans who take desperate measures to seek better lives abroad. We must redouble efforts to create jobs and give our youth hope in their own countries,” Mahama said.
