Popular Nigerian Afrobeats singer Yemi Alade has revealed that lying about her age once led her into depression.
Speaking in a candid interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the ‘Knack Am’ crooner said she spent years telling people she was 22, only to later discover she was actually 25.
Yemi explained that the realisation hit her hard, leaving her mentally and emotionally distressed for several days.
“There was a time someone asked me my age, and I kept saying for three years that I was 22,” she said. “Then I realised I was 25 years old. I took out my phone and did the mathematics. I was depressed for a few days. My mind wasn’t taking in the process.”
The singer added that the confusion over her actual age caused her mental challenges for about three years, describing it as a difficult phase in her life.
“It was mental — for three years, I didn’t know my right age,” Yemi admitted.
