The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has officially banned skitmaking, filmmaking, and other forms of content creation on its campus without prior approval.

The announcement, signed by the university’s Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, was released on Thursday. The institution expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals filming skits, movies, and social media content within university premises—including hostels—without authorization.

According to UNILAG, the move is aimed at protecting the academic environment and safeguarding the university’s image from misrepresentation in unregulated productions.

“The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pops, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,” the statement read.

The university emphasized that all forms of recording or content production on campus must follow laid-down procedures and be approved by the Communication Unit. This, they said, ensures safety, orderliness, and respect for the integrity of its academic and residential spaces.

While UNILAG acknowledged the importance of creativity and self-expression, it stressed that these must align with institutional regulations.

“Members of the University community and general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility,” the statement added.

This decision comes as universities across Nigeria increasingly become filming locations for skits and social media content. Notably, UNILAG has produced some of Nigeria’s most popular skitmakers, including Muhammed Gilmore, who graduated in 2024, and Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie (Brain Jotter), who finished his studies later that same year.
