In a decisive announcement, the Constitutional Council of Cameroon has officially declared President Paul Biya, 92, the winner of the 2025 Presidential Election. Biya, who has been in power since 1982, secured 53.66% of the votes, triumphing over his closest challenger Issa Tchiroma, who garnered 35.19% of the ballots.

The announcement came on the morning of Monday 27th of October after a week of anticipation and a tightly contested election process. President Biya, representing the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC), has won his eighth consecutive term, further cementing his lengthy political tenure.

A Victory Amid Controversy

Biya’s victory has drawn mixed reactions across the country. Supporters of the president celebrated the result, citing his long-standing leadership and political stability. In contrast, critics, particularly from opposition parties, have voiced concerns about the election process, with allegations of voter suppression and irregularities.

However, the Constitutional Council upheld the integrity of the election, dismissing claims of fraud and reaffirming the legitimacy of the results. Issa Tchiroma, the candidate from the Social Democratic Front (SDF), expressed his disappointment but vowed to continue advocating for the rights of the Cameroonian people.

A Historic Victory for Biya

At 92, President Biya becomes one of the world’s longest-serving leaders. His continued hold on power has sparked debates about Cameroon’s political future. Biya’s reign has been marked by periods of economic progress, but also significant unrest, including challenges in the Anglophone regions and a growing demand for democratic reforms.

The international community is now watching closely as Biya embarks on another term, with many questioning the future of democratic practices in Cameroon and the broader Central African region.

Looking Ahead

As President Biya prepares to assume office for his eighth term, political analysts are keen to see how he will address the nation’s mounting issues, including economic development, security concerns, and political reform. With Cameroon’s 2025 presidential victory now secured, the question remains: Will this be a turning point for the country, or will Biya’s leadership continue to dominate for years to come?
