Hollywood filmmaker and philanthropist Tyler Perry has donated $100,000 to Bishop Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church in Detroit, following a viral incident that drew widespread criticism.
The controversy began during the church’s “Day of Giving” service on October 19, when Bishop Winans was seen publicly questioning a longtime member, Roberta McCoy, after she donated $1,235 “in faith.”
“That’s only $1,200,” Winans remarked, to which McCoy responded that she would bring the remaining $800 later. The exchange sparked backlash online, with many accusing the pastor of humiliating a devoted member over her contribution.
In response, both Winans and McCoy later clarified the situation. McCoy said she did not feel rebuked, explaining that the pastor was simply organizing donors “by increments.” Winans also apologized directly to her, noting that his actions were intended to maintain order during the fundraising event.
Despite the online outrage, Tyler Perry stepped in with a generous $100,000 donation to support the church’s long-delayed building project on 7 Mile and Woodward, which has been under development since 2002.
Known for his history of supporting churches and community initiatives, Perry’s contribution has drawn mixed reactions—while some praised his generosity, others criticized him for appearing to overlook the pastor’s controversial behavior.
Perry has not publicly responded to the backlash.
