The People’s Republic of China has warned against external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, voicing firm support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration amid recent criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mao Ning, spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks during a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday. She stated that China maintains a longstanding principle of non-interference and supports Nigeria’s sovereignty and efforts toward national development.

“China opposes any form of external interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations. We stand firmly with Nigeria and President Tinubu’s government as they work to promote stability and growth,” Mao said.

Her comments came in response to Trump’s recent statements accusing the Nigerian government of committing “genocide against Christians.” The former U.S. president had also labelled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” sparking widespread reactions from both Nigerian and international observers.

China’s response is seen as a reaffirmation of its diplomatic partnership with Nigeria, one of its key allies in Africa. Over the years, both nations have deepened cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and technology under the Belt and Road Initiative.

“Nigeria is an important partner of China in Africa. We believe the Nigerian people have the wisdom and ability to handle their internal matters without external pressure,” Mao added.

The Chinese government’s position adds an international dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding religious freedom and governance in Nigeria. The Tinubu administration has yet to issue an official response to Trump’s remarks.
