Democrat Zohran Mamdani, 34, has won the New York City mayoral race, becoming the first Muslim and youngest mayor in over a century.
“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” Mamdani said in his victory speech, pledging progressive reforms and challenging President Donald Trump, who had warned he would cut federal funds if Mamdani won.
Trump reacted online: “And so it begins.”
Democrats also claimed major victories in Virginia and New Jersey, signaling momentum against Trump’s second-term agenda.
Mamdani’s historic win marks a new chapter for the city—but major tests await.
