Why Appearance Is Very Important in Nollywood – Actress Yvonne Jegede Speaks

Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has shared her thoughts on the ongoing debate about actors being chosen for roles based on their appearance or skin tone rather than pure acting talent.

In an interview with Hip TV, Jegede explained that appearance plays a major role in the entertainment industry because showbiz thrives on visual appeal.

According to her, “There are so many things actors can rely on. It’s not just looks. But then again, looks is very important because it’s showbiz. It’s what you show people that brings business, so appearance matters a lot.”

She added that while some actors secure roles through other merits, those whose strongest asset is their looks should feel free to use it. “If you want to rely on your looks, if that’s your best foot, bring it forward. It happens in every other industry,” she said.

Speaking on earnings in Nollywood, Jegede noted that payment varies based on an actor’s achievements and how long they’ve been in the industry.

“It depends on your milestone and the dues you’ve paid. If you’ve been here long enough and paid your dues, you’ll definitely be paid your worth,” she stated.

Jegede added that Nollywood “pays the bills — not all the bills, but it does pay the bills,” expressing satisfaction with the industry’s growth compared to previous years.
