Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking one of the most significant political shifts in the South-South ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor announced his move during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt, saying the decision was taken “in the best interest of Rivers people.” His defection comes after months of speculation and follows earlier defections of several state lawmakers to the APC.
Political analysts say Fubara’s switch strengthens the APC’s growing influence in the region and further weakens the PDP’s hold on one of its former strongholds. The PDP has yet to issue an official reaction.
Fubara’s defection is expected to reshape the political landscape in Rivers State as both parties prepare for the next electoral cycle.
