Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has alleged that a wealthy Nigerian family lost a loved one, as well as a large sum of money, after relying on spiritual healing instead of medical care for a terminal illness.
Kuti made the claim in a video that has been widely circulated online, where he recounted how the family sought divine intervention after doctors abroad reportedly informed them that nothing more could be done medically for the woman, who was battling terminal cancer.
According to him, the family brought the woman back to Nigeria and took her to the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s camp, believing that prayers would restore her health. He said the environment was filled with religious activities and assurances that she would recover despite her condition.
Kuti alleged that after several days of prayers at the camp, the woman eventually died, leaving her family shocked and devastated. He further claimed that the family spent about $250,000 during the period, driven by the belief that spiritual intervention would save her life.
The singer also alleged that after her death, Pastor Enoch Adeboye instructed the family to stop crying and asked them to kneel beside the woman’s body while he went inside to pray for her revival. According to Kuti, after about an hour, the woman did not come back to life, and the family was later told to return home.
Kuti criticised the promotion of faith healing in cases of terminal illness, arguing that it often gives families false hope and leaves them emotionally unprepared for death. He said such situations frequently end in deep emotional pain, financial loss, and long-lasting trauma for those involved.
Speaking partly in pidgin, Kuti said the woman had been told abroad that her condition was terminal, but she refused to accept death and believed prayers in Nigeria would heal her. He claimed that despite all efforts and prayers at the camp, she died there, and after spending a significant amount of money, the family was left with nothing but grief.
