Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has shared his personal views on prayer, saying he does not believe in it and has never prayed in his life.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, the outspoken musician described prayer as ineffective and childish, arguing that a person’s life is shaped by their actions and choices, not prayers.
According to Seun Kuti, people place too much importance on praying instead of taking responsibility for their lives. He said he does not know how to pray and does not believe it works.
“I have never prayed before in my life. I don’t know how to pray. I don’t believe it works,” he said. “Your life is your prayer. What you do with your life is your prayer. Praying in public or aloud is eye service. It is childishness.”
He explained that actions, not words spoken in prayer, determine outcomes in life. To him, living intentionally and making decisions is the only form of “prayer” that matters.
Seun also questioned the common religious idea of God, arguing that if everything is already decided by God’s will, then prayer becomes meaningless.
“This concept of God that most people have is why prayer is completely null and void,” he said. “You say God has already written everything from the beginning to the end and that his will must be done. So unless your prayer aligns with his will, it will not be answered.”
He accused religious leaders of hiding this idea from followers in order to exploit them.
“Clerics won’t tell you this because they want to exploit you,” he claimed.
The singer added that he prefers to confront his problems directly rather than pray about them.
“I solve my problems. I don’t pray over my problems,” he said. “If prayer solves problems, prisons and hospitals would be empty.”
Seun Kuti’s comments have once again sparked debate online, as he is known for openly challenging religion, tradition, and social norms.
