Nigerian Coalition Set to Announce New Party Before End of June

In a major political shake-up ahead of the 2027 general elections, a coalition of influential Nigerian politicians is set to unveil a **new political party** before the end of June, multiple sources confirmed.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai are  spearheading the coalition, signaling what could be the biggest political realignment in Nigeria since 2013.

The new party, insiders say, will be positioned as a “third force”, aiming to disrupt the traditional dominance of the *lAll Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) — both of which are facing internal crises.

“This is not just a movement; it’s a merger of minds with a shared agenda for Nigeria’s future,” said a senior source close to the negotiations, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks.

Talks between the camps of Atiku, Obi, and El-Rufai have reportedly intensified in recent weeks, driven by a shared frustration with the current state of governance, economic hardship, insecurity, and perceived party failures.

Sources say the proposed party is likely to blend ideologies from PDP’s old guard, Labour Party’s youth base, and APC’s reformist wing, with a focus on national unity, economic revival, and security reform.

“Nigeria is bigger than any single party or personality,” said an aide to Peter Obi. “We’re building a platform that listens to the people, not one that recycles broken promises.”

Behind the Scenes: Strategic Calculations

While Atiku remains a senior figure in the PDP, and Obi still holds sway within the Labour Party, both men have reportedly agreed to step away from their current parties if the new platform gains momentum and popular support.

El-Rufai, who has maintained a strategic silence since exiting the APC’s inner circle, is seen as a wildcard — potentially bringing Northern political weight and technocratic credibility to the new group.
