Nollywood actress and producer, Etinosa Idemudia, has advised people who live far away from their parents to make deliberate efforts to stay in touch and regularly check on them.
She shared the message on social media while reflecting on how many parents feel when their children grow older and move away, especially to other countries. According to Etinosa, as people grow up, they often become busy with careers, marriage, and raising their own families, but this should not lead them to forget their parents.
She explained that many parents raise children with the hope that they will not be alone in old age, but life does not always turn out that way. Distance and new responsibilities can cause children to drift away, leaving parents feeling lonely, even when they understand their children’s circumstances.
Etinosa wrote:
“If you and your siblings live very far from your parents, please try to check on your parents regularly.”
She acknowledged how demanding adult life can be but urged people not to forget their roots.
“I know you are busy with your new life, career and kids, but don’t forget when they were young, they gave birth thinking, ‘when I’m old, I will not be lonely. My children will surround me,’” she said.
The actress added that reality often turns out differently, especially for elderly parents whose children live abroad.
“But reality hits different, reality hits hard… especially old ones with children abroad,” she wrote.
Etinosa concluded by noting that having children for companionship in old age does not always work out as expected, urging people to be more intentional about staying connected with their parents.
