Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has reaffirmed his confidence in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party remains alive, strong and resilient despite internal challenges and defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jonathan made the remarks on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja.

The meeting focused on reconciliation, internal cohesion, and strategic repositioning of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Jonathan described the PDP as more than a political platform, calling it a national institution and a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

“The PDP, being the only surviving original political party since 1998, has been a critical contributor to our democracy since 1999,” Jonathan said, noting his gratitude for the opportunities the party afforded him as deputy governor, governor, vice president and president.

He urged PDP leaders to prioritize national interest and institutional development over personal ambitions, stressing that strong political parties are essential to democratic stability.

PDP Leadership Responds

Turaki thanked Jonathan for his “fatherly counsel, guidance and enduring loyalty” to the party. He described the former president’s assurance of continued active involvement as reassuring and encouraging for members preparing for upcoming elections, including off-season polls in Ekiti and Osun states.

According to Turaki, Jonathan confirmed that he is still a card-carrying member of the PDP and will play a more active role in party affairs going forward.

Party Challenges and Renewal

The leadership also briefed Jonathan on the challenges and prospects facing the party, including ongoing legal battles and internal disputes, but insisted that PDP remains a viable platform for returning power to the people.

Turaki said the party is engaging aggrieved members and stakeholders nationwide as part of a “Rebirth Agenda” aimed at rebuilding unity and strengthening the PDP’s grassroots presence.

Outlook

Jonathan’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about PDP’s preparedness for the 2027 general elections, as the party seeks to reposition itself against the ruling APC. Despite reports of defections and internal discord, senior members maintain that the PDP will remain a major force in Nigeria’s democracy.
