The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the death of popular Nigerian singer, Adesina Afeez, widely known as Destiny Boy.
The police confirmed that the case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for a thorough investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said the command had commenced a full investigation into the death of the 22-year-old artiste.
“The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing,” the statement said.
News of Destiny Boy’s death broke on Sunday after disturbing videos showing his body being transported to a mortuary circulated on social media. In one of the clips, the singer was seen lying in the back of a vehicle with cotton wool placed in his nostrils and ears, sparking widespread grief and speculation about the cause of his death.
Amid the speculations, an unidentified associate of the late singer released a separate video to address the situation. He claimed Destiny Boy had been battling a private health challenge before his death.
“God, I want to do this video before people start saying rubbish about Destiny Boy’s cause of death. We all came to this life to write our own history. May God rest his soul. Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” the man said.
Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy started his music journey at a young age and was known for his Fuji-influenced sound. He began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for Fuji legend Pasuma.
He rose to fame in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song *If*, which went viral on social media. He also released covers of songs by artistes such as Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor.
Some of his notable songs include Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio nGbonkankan, and Lowkey.
Destiny Boy welcomed his first child with his partner, Iremide, in November 2024.
The police said further updates would be made available as investigations progress.
