Saida, the mother of the late Afrobeat star Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has spoken about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.
The singer, who rose to fame in 2019 with his Fuji cover of Davido’s hit song If, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2025, after a long battle with a mysterious illness called “Ogu oru”, which caused frequent seizures.
In a video that went viral, Saida explained that Destiny Boy’s condition was carefully managed by the family, traditional healers, and clerics, but kept private due to his celebrity status. She described how the illness worsened after his child’s naming ceremony, prompting hospital visits and traditional treatment guided by Oba Edu Ifayomi, who supported the family throughout his illness.
Saida also addressed rumours linking Destiny Boy to money rituals, firmly denying them:
“Destiny Boy was not involved in money rituals. Those spreading such misinformation are just seeking attention.”
She recalled his final days, saying he remained caring and active despite his illness:
“On Saturday, he still bought things for people, greeted his fans, and mentioned he had a show on Sunday. Even then, the seizure caught him again.”
Destiny Boy had celebrated the birth of his first child in November 2024. The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that investigations into his death are ongoing, with further updates expected.
