The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has faulted calls by the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, asking the deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to step down from office.
The party made its position known in a statement issued by its Kano State spokesman, Ibrahim Karaye. It stated that the constitution permits the deputy governor to remain in office.
The NNPP said the call for Gwarzo’s resignation followed his refusal to defect alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and some government aides to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
According to the party, the deputy governor retains the right to continue carrying out his official duties because he and the governor emerged through the same electoral ticket.
The NNPP also cautioned the state executive arm against political interference. It urged officials to restrict themselves to duties clearly outlined in the constitution.
The statement added, “It is important for the deputy governor to continue holding his position in the interest of better leadership in the state.”
The party further stated that the Commissioner for Information was not involved in the struggle that produced the current administration. It advised him to remain silent on matters related to the leadership arrangement in the state.
