Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has shared a frightening experience from her teenage years when she found herself in a dangerous situation while trying to raise money for her brother’s school fees.
The actress spoke about the incident during an appearance on The Afropolitan Show, revealing that she was only 15 years old at the time.
According to her, a colleague in the film industry took her to a rough neighbourhood in Mushin, Lagos State, to meet some men known for lending money.
Omotola explained that they had to walk through a tough environment before arriving at a place where the men were gathered.
She said the men were known in the area for giving loans but were also considered dangerous.
The actress recalled pleading with them to help her with money because her brother needed to pay his school fees. She admitted that the situation was very frightening because she was young and surrounded by men with a reputation for trouble.
She said:
“There was also a time when a colleague in the industry took me to some place in Mushin, some ghetto place. We walked through this rough place. I was about 15 years old then.
We got to this place and these bad boys were there, like in a sitting room, and I begged them that I was looking for money for my brother’s school fees. And this guy looked at me… they could have harmed me.”
She explained that the men eventually agreed to give her the money she requested.
However, she later encountered problems when it was time to repay the loan. According to her, she was unable to return the money as agreed, which led to tension with the lenders.
Omotola said the situation eventually escalated when the men went to her family home to confront them over the unpaid debt.
During the confrontation, they reportedly took away some household items, including the family’s television and DVD player, as a way of recovering the money they believed they were owed.
