They’re Supportive, Very Confident – Ayra Starr Praises Nigerian Men After Backlash

Ayra Starr has spoken positively about Nigerian men despite previously receiving backlash from some of them on social media.

During an interview on Way Up with Angela Yee, the Afrobeats singer said Nigerian men are very supportive and confident. She also compared them to men in New York, saying both share similar qualities.

Speaking during the interview, she said: “Nigerian men love to take care of their women. They are very supportive of their wife or girlfriend. They are very, very confident, so it is almost the same thing as New York men. But you know, men are men. A man is a man still. It is a universal thing.”

Her comments come months after she faced criticism online from some Nigerian men. The backlash started when critics said her feminist views on social media did not match some of her actions in real life.

Some people pointed to her excited reaction when she met Chris Brown and a dance video she made to a song by Naira Marley. They argued that those actions did not match the feminist image many believed she promoted.

Ayra Starr has also faced criticism in the past over her fashion choices. In 2023, she responded to critics by saying they are not her “pastor” or “mother,” and therefore should not control how she chooses to dress.
