Lionel Messi has made history after becoming the fastest player to score 900 career goals in official matches.

The milestone was reached on Wednesday during Inter Miami’s 1-1 draw against Nashville SC in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Messi opened the scoring early in the match, but Nashville equalised through Cristian Espinoza, knocking Inter Miami out of the competition on away goals.

Despite the result, the goal marked a major personal achievement for Messi, making him just the second male player in football history to reach 900 official goals, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo had previously reached the milestone in September 2024 and currently leads the all-time chart with 965 goals, with ambitions to become the first player to hit 1,000 goals.

Messi achieved his 900 goals in 1,142 matches, faster than Ronaldo, who took 1,236 games to reach the same mark.

In the all-time rankings, Brazilian legend Pelé sits third with 765 goals, while active players like Robert Lewandowski trail behind.

A large portion of Messi’s goals came during his time at Barcelona, where he scored 672 goals after making his debut in 2004. He later added 32 goals at Paris Saint-Germain before continuing his scoring form at Inter Miami, where he has recorded 81 goals.

On the international stage, Messi has scored 115 goals for Argentina, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players in football history.

His most remarkable year remains 2012, when he scored 91 goals for club and country — a record widely regarded as one of football’s greatest individual achievements.
