The Nigerian Army has graduated 27 newly trained drone pilots in Kaduna, marking a significant step in its efforts to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve operational efficiency in ongoing security operations across the North West.
The graduation ceremony, held at the Division Training School, Giginya Military Cantonment, Kaduna, was announced on Friday by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA. The event underscores the Army’s commitment to integrating modern technology into its operations under the ongoing counter-insurgency framework.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force (North West), Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, described the initiative as a reflection of the Army’s growing reliance on technology-driven warfare. He emphasized that drones are no longer optional but a necessity in modern military operations.
“The integration of drones into our operations is no longer optional; it is a necessity. The true strength of any military force lies not just in acquiring advanced equipment, but in effectively integrating them into our operational systems,” he said.
The training programme was coordinated by Captain Samuel Yakubu, who described it as a strategic initiative designed to enhance frontline capabilities through technology.
“This training was a visionary initiative aimed at giving our troops eyes in the sky. It has significantly enhanced the operational effectiveness of personnel across different formations within the Division’s area of responsibility,” Yakubu said.
According to him, 27 personnel drawn from various units under the Division participated in the rigorous programme, which combined theoretical instruction with practical exercises. The curriculum covered drone navigation using offline maps, aircraft assembly and disassembly, ground control station setup, surveillance operations, and aerial imaging techniques. Trainees also learned takeoff and landing procedures, tactical manoeuvres, and precision landing exercises.
The course concluded with a live demonstration in which the newly qualified drone pilots showcased their skills.
