The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the commencement of a two-week warning strike to press home its longstanding demands from the Federal Government.
President of the union, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made the announcement during an emergency press conference held at the Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
According to ASUU, the decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the government to address issues affecting the university system. The ultimatum, which lapsed on Sunday, September 28, reportedly drew no tangible response from authorities.
“There is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14 days’ notice,” Piwuna stated.
He directed all ASUU branches nationwide to withdraw their services effective from midnight, Monday, October 13, 2025, emphasizing that the warning strike will be total and comprehensive.
ASUU accused the government of neglecting the public university system and consistently failing to honour previous agreements. The union urged students and parents to understand that the strike is aimed at rescuing and transforming the nation’s universities.
“We are only asking for the transformation of our university system. We equally invite patriotic Nigerians, including workers, media practitioners and civil society activists, to join ASUU in this mission,” the statement read.
The union maintained that the Federal Government’s persistent refusal to meet its demands has left it with no option but to take industrial action once again.
ASUU last embarked on a nationwide strike in 2022, which lasted eight months before it was suspended following a court order.
