Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said that governors who are joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) are doing so for “personal survival.”
In a statement issued on Friday through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku reacted to the recent defection of Ahmadu Fintiri, who moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
The former vice-president, who is now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said politicians have the right to choose any platform they prefer.
He also stated that the 2027 general election will serve as a test of public confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling party.
Atiku noted that political defections are not unusual in Nigeria’s history. He added that even members of his family are free to take different political paths.
He, however, argued that the recent wave of defections does not reflect the strength of the APC. According to him, it points to pressure and intimidation within the political space.
He accused the current administration of using state institutions against opponents in an attempt to create a one-party system.
“This government fears accountability. It fears credible elections. It fears the people,” the statement reads.
“Governors may defect for personal survival. Nigerians are defecting in their millions because they want survival.”
“What will the APC campaign on in 2027 — hunger? hardship? hopelessness?”
Atiku stressed that switching political parties should not be mistaken for popularity. He urged citizens to remain firm and make informed choices during elections.
“Do not trade your future. Do not mortgage your children’s tomorrow. In 2027, the people will have their say—and their will shall prevail,” he said.
The former vice-president, who was a founding member of both the APC and the PDP, joined the ADC in November 2025.
