Lagos State has been hit by a power outage after a fire broke out along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has confirmed.
In a statement, the company explained that the disruption was caused by a collision between a moving vehicle and a stationary gas tanker, which sparked a blaze that severely damaged critical electricity infrastructure.
“Please be informed that the current outage resulted from a fire incident that occurred last night after a vehicle collided with a stationary gas tanker,” EKEDC said.
“The fire caused significant damage to the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, including essential conductors and overhead line equipment. Our technical teams are currently working to replace the affected components and restore supply as quickly and safely as possible. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” the statement added.
The affected areas include communities connected to the Medallion feeder, such as Medallion Company, as well as Sangotedo, Majek, Fidiso, Awoyaya, Container, Eputu, Lagasa, Losoro, Kajola, and Onisan, all served by the Ibeju 33kV feeder.
The incident occurred shortly after a separate gas explosion in the Ajah axis of Lagos earlier on Saturday, which reportedly killed two people and destroyed warehouses and roadside shops near the Tera Ahmed bus stop in Sangotedo.
EKEDC has advised residents in the impacted areas to remain cautious while repair operations continue. The company assured that power will be restored once it is safe to do so.
