The Nigerian Armed Forces has inaugurated a general court-martial to try 36 personnel accused of being involved in an alleged plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Defence Headquarters set up the court-martial on Friday at the Scorpion Mess in Abuja under tight security.
The proceedings were held behind closed doors because of the sensitive nature of the case.
Journalists, including accredited defence correspondents who had been invited earlier, were denied access to the venue.
Security officials also restricted the use of mobile phones, preventing documentation of the arrival of the 36 accused personnel.
The defendants were reportedly brought to the venue in an Army Headquarters Garrison bus at about 8:53 a.m.
The military trial is happening alongside separate criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against civilians allegedly linked to the coup plot at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
