A total of 117 students from Northern Nigeria have officially departed for Algeria to pursue fully funded university degrees in medicine, engineering, and other science-related disciplines, under a prestigious international scholarship programme.
The life-changing opportunity was facilitated by the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation, a non-profit organisation known for championing educational advancement and youth development across the region.
The students, selected from various northern states through a rigorous screening process, are set to begin academic programmes in some of Algeria’s top universities. Their fields of study include medicine, civil and electrical engineering, computer science, and other critical STEM courses.
Speaking at the departure ceremony held in Abuja, representatives of the Foundation expressed confidence in the students’ ability to excel and urged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria.
“This scholarship is not just about academic pursuit; it’s about building future leaders who will return to contribute meaningfully to their communities and to the nation at large,” said a Foundation spokesperson.
Parents, community leaders, and education stakeholders hailed the initiative, calling it a timely intervention in addressing educational disparities and promoting global exposure for Nigerian youth.
The students will benefit from full tuition coverage, accommodation, living allowances, and medical insurance for the duration of their programmes.
This marks another milestone in the Foundation’s commitment to human capital development in Northern Nigeria, having previously sponsored hundreds of students for local and international studies over the past decade.
