The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked reports linking the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary to an alleged attempted military coup, describing the publication as false, malicious, and misleading
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 18, 2025, by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau Director of Defence Information, the DHQ said the online report misrepresented facts and was aimed at creating tension and distrust among citizens.
According to the statement, the cancellation of the anniversary parade was due to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled strategic bilateral engagement outside the country, and to allow the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to maintain focus on ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry across the nation.
“The claims by the said publication are entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace,” the statement read.
The DHQ further clarified that the sixteen officers mentioned in the earlier press release were not linked to any coup attempt but are under routine internal investigation for professional misconduct. An investigative panel has been constituted, and its findings will be made public upon conclusion.
The military high command also called on Nigerians to disregard the falsehoods being circulated and to continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to safeguard the nation.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” Brigadier General Gusau stated.
The statement reaffirmed that the Federal Government, the Legislature, and the Judiciary are working together to ensure the safety, development, and well-being of the country, adding that “democracy is forever.”
