A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has warned that any division between former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could work in favor of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Momodu gave the warning in a post shared on X, where he cautioned that disunity among opposition parties could once again affect the outcome of the next election. He stressed that opposition unity would be very important, considering factors such as political structure, experience, and voter enthusiasm.
Recalling the 2023 presidential election, Momodu noted that Atiku and Obi finished second and third respectively, a situation he believes should not be repeated. According to him, dividing opposition votes again would give President Tinubu a clear advantage.
He praised Atiku for his resilience and consistency in Nigerian politics, pointing out that despite losing several elections, Atiku has never given up. Momodu compared him to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who lost multiple elections before eventually winning but had at one point stepped aside.
Momodu also highlighted the strong support base and energy Peter Obi has built among his followers, especially within the ADC. He added that Atiku, on the other hand, still has solid political structures that he has been developing for decades, dating back to 1993 when he stepped down for Chief Moshood Abiola during the SDP presidential primaries in Jos.
He concluded that bringing together Obi’s grassroots energy and Atiku’s long-standing political structure could be decisive, warning that any division between the two would only strengthen Tinubu’s chances.
