Former Anambra State governor Willie Obiano has reportedly died in London, United Kingdom. According to family sources, he passed away after a long battle with severe heart failure and complications related to urinary cancer.
They explained that his health had been declining for months, but the final collapse happened suddenly, leaving the family devastated. Medical staff in London said he received intensive treatment and continued fighting until the very end.
Before his death, Obiano was scheduled to appear in court on November 25 at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He was facing a nine-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly mismanaging about N4 billion belonging to the state. The case was recently reassigned to Justice Mohammed Umar.
Obiano served as the governor of Anambra State from March 2014 to March 2022. In a previous court session held on October 7, 2024, the EFCC presented two witnesses. One of them, Ugochukwu Otubelu, a former commercial bank worker, explained how he handled the state’s security vote account.
He said the account had two signatories: Willie Nwokoye, the former Principal Secretary, and Theophilus Nweze, the Accountant. Otubelu stated that he interacted with them regularly while processing transactions during Obiano’s administration.
