A former governor from one of Nigeria’s southern states is reportedly under investigation for his alleged connection to the army officers detained over a suspected coup plot.
Sources who spoke to Daily Trust on Sunday said security agencies are probing claims that the former governor may have financed the alleged plot, which was said to have been scheduled for October 25.
The development follows reports by Sahara Reporters and Premium Times, which indicated that 16 military officers earlier announced by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) as being arrested for “unprofessional conduct” were, in fact, being investigated for plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
While the DHQ has dismissed reports of any coup attempt, confirming only that the officers are under internal investigation, sources said the probe has now expanded to include civilian collaborators allegedly linked to the suspects.
Security agencies have yet to make an official statement regarding the identity of the former governor or the extent of his alleged involvement.
