The Federal Government has released ₦2.3 billion to settle outstanding salary and promotion arrears owed to academic staff in federal universities, as part of renewed efforts to improve welfare and strengthen dialogue with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, disclosed this in Abuja while providing updates on the government’s ongoing engagement with ASUU and other university-based unions.

According to Alausa, the payment underscores the government’s commitment to addressing long-standing concerns within the tertiary education sector and fostering industrial harmony on campuses.

“The release of ₦2.3 billion for the clearance of salary and promotion arrears demonstrates our resolve to prioritize the welfare of academic staff and ensure the stability of our universities,” the Minister said.

He added that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with relevant agencies, is working to resolve other pending issues affecting university staff and to enhance the quality of higher education across the country.

The move comes amid continued consultations between the government and ASUU on the implementation of agreements aimed at reforming Nigeria’s university system, improving infrastructure, and ensuring sustainable funding.

Stakeholders have commended the development, expressing optimism that it will strengthen trust between the Federal Government and the academic community, and avert future disruptions in the university calendar.
