Two individuals sustained gunshot wounds following a foiled kidnapping attempt in the Old Kara area of Bodija, located within Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State. The incident, which unfolded on April 21, 2026, at about 7:50 p.m., has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in the region.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, the attack was carried out by four armed men who stormed a Point of Sale (POS) shop in the area and opened fire. A distress call from a resident alerted security operatives, who swiftly mobilized to the scene. Working in collaboration with local hunters, the police disrupted the operation and prevented what authorities believe was a coordinated abduction attempt.

Olayinka explained that during the exchange of gunfire, two persons were injured. They were immediately rescued and taken to a medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment and are said to be responding positively. He assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, with bush-combing operations intensified in and around Bodija to track down the criminals.

This latest incident comes just days after a similar attack in Onigambari village along the Ijebu-Ode axis in Oluyole Local Government Area, where a victim identified as Dasola was killed. The recurrence of such violent crimes has raised alarm among residents and underscored the urgent need for stronger security measures across Oyo State.

In response, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the deployment of additional personnel to vulnerable areas, reinforcing patrols and surveillance to deter further attacks. The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that investigations are underway to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Authorities have also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements promptly. The police emphasized that community cooperation is vital in combating kidnapping and other violent crimes, noting that the swift response in Bodija was made possible by timely information from locals.

Security analysts argue that the collaboration between police operatives and local hunters highlights the importance of community-based security initiatives. They point out that while formal law enforcement agencies play a central role, local knowledge and grassroots vigilance often provide the first line of defense against criminal activities.

Residents of Bodija expressed relief that the attempted kidnapping was foiled but voiced concerns about the growing frequency of such attacks. Many called for more visible policing and proactive measures to restore confidence in public safety. Traders and business owners in the area, particularly those operating POS shops and small retail outlets, say they feel increasingly vulnerable to armed attacks.

The incident also underscores broader insecurity challenges in Oyo State and Nigeria at large, where kidnapping for ransom has become a persistent threat. Analysts warn that unless decisive action is taken, criminal groups may continue to exploit weak security structures and target communities.

The police have pledged to intensify intelligence gathering and strengthen coordination with other security agencies to curb the menace. They also assured residents that the injured victims are receiving adequate medical care and that their recovery is being closely monitored.

As investigations continue, the foiled Bodija kidnapping serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance, community cooperation, and sustained government commitment to tackling insecurity. The Command’s appeal for public support reflects a growing recognition that combating violent crime requires a collective effort.

For now, residents remain cautious, balancing relief over the successful intervention with anxiety about future threats. The police insist that with strengthened patrols, community collaboration, and ongoing operations, they are determined to restore peace and security across Oyo State.
