Kabiru Turaki, former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, has been elected as the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The election, which took place at the party’s national convention, marks a significant shift in the leadership of one of Nigeria’s major political parties.

Turaki’s election was confirmed after a highly anticipated and competitive race that saw him emerge victorious with overwhelming support from delegates at the convention. His ascent to the party’s highest position comes as the PDP seeks to consolidate its position in Nigerian politics and rebuild its strategy ahead of future electoral contests.

In his acceptance speech, Turaki vowed to unify the party and steer it towards a path of progressive reforms, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and transparency within the party’s ranks. He also called for a renewed focus on addressing the pressing issues facing the Nigerian people, including security, the economy, and governance.

“I am deeply honored by the trust you have placed in me,” Turaki said in his speech. “This is a moment of great responsibility, and I pledge to work tirelessly for the betterment of our great party and the Nigerian people. Together, we will build a future that is prosperous, secure, and just.”

Turaki, who has a wealth of experience in both public service and party politics, served as the Minister of Special Duties under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. His election as National Chairman marks the latest chapter in his long career in Nigerian politics, where he has been known for his advocacy for democratic governance, human rights, and sustainable development.

Turaki Vows to End Impunity, Restore Discipline as New PDP Chairman

The PDP, which has been in opposition since 2015 following its loss in the presidential election, is hoping that Turaki’s leadership will inspire a new era of political strength and unity. With the next general elections approaching, the party is working on strengthening its organizational structure, broadening its appeal, and positioning itself as a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the coming weeks, political analysts and party members alike will be closely watching Turaki’s next steps as he begins his tenure at the helm of the PDP, with expectations running high that he will bring new energy and strategic direction to the party’s national campaigns.

Political Landscape Watch
The election of Turaki as PDP National Chairman is expected to shake up the political dynamics in the run-up to the 2027 elections, as party members and rival political groups gear up for what promises to be an exciting and unpredictable race.

As the new leader of the PDP, Turaki now faces the challenge of navigating internal party dynamics, healing any existing divisions, and formulating a winning strategy that can resonate with voters across the country. His leadership will be critical in determining the future trajectory of the PDP and its chances in upcoming elections.
